On Thursday, I had the opportunity to sit down with Joe Ybarra, the Vice President of Product Development for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, the company responsible for the development of the recently announced MMORPG, Stargate Worlds. Sara Baker, the director of marketing also joined us for a conversation about this brand new game. Ybarra is no stranger to video games, with 50 under his belt, or to the MMORPG genre, as this is his 4th MMO title, following on the heels of Shadow of Yserbius, Shadowbane, and The Matrix Online.

At this stage of production (pre-production), all of the decisions for the game have not been made, their team, which they hope will reach nearly 60, is only half full. Ybarra provided us with a number of firm details as well as their thoughts and hopes for the game. What he did say, was that this game is not going to be "orcs in space", and will offer something unique that is true to the Stargate franchise.

The game itself will be based around 3 major factions. The first are the Free People. They're the good guys on the show, the Humans, the Asgard, the Tok'ra, are examples of these, basically the forces of good. The second faction involved in the game will be the Control People, those who seek to enslave and rule. The System Lords and other Goa'Uld seek to rule by fear and power, providing an excellent contrast to the Free People, a constant struggle. If this wasn't enough, the third group is known as The Entropy Group. Those who seek only to hurt and to destroy, the robotic Replicators personify this ideal. On top of this, the developers are looking to give players the ability to play a wide variety of races. The Asgard, for example, are a race that players have been asking for. MGM has given the ok on this, and it is the current plan to include them as playable. Joe also mentioned the possibility of including the symbiotes as a playable race. This would give players the opportunity to shift hosts and to make the decision of whether to be Tok'Ra or Goa'Uld in their behaviors. Giving the players what he called "betrayal ideas".

Ybarra went on to tell us that the game would be focused around small groups. Much like the TV series, most quests will focus around 4 man teams. They are looking to capture the feel of modern infantry combat, fire and maneuver. To that end, Ybarra told us that players will be able to use their environments in combat, firing and ducking for cover. In most MMORPGs, players concentrate on fighting one-on one, in this game, says Ybarra "rather than individual engagement, players will engage areas and can fire on those that enter the area". While they are clearly putting quite a bit of thought into their combat, the developers would also like for it to be possible for players to take a different route to the level cap, one that does not require the firing of a weapon. We are told that the game will have many large areas to explore. When asked what degree of instancing this game would use, Ybarra told us that instancing would be used if it was needed to "preserve quest integrity", but was firm on the idea that this would be a social game, with some non-instanced areas for players to fully explore.

We talked a little bit about the idea of player death. In a world that involves that kind of combat, death is inevitable. When I asked about death penalties, Ybarra told us that while they are still investigating what to do upon a player's death, their philosophy is "Do not punish the customers," he said that it was one thing to cause an inconvenience to give death meaning, but out and out punishment would not be used. He mentioned that it was possible that players would be given some kind of "time out". They're looking at using a mechanical device known as a FRED, which players can take with them on missions and use as a kind of movable backpack as well as a kind of spawn point.

The game will have a player vs. player element, with players, beginning a mid-level range, will battle over "contested worlds", worlds that are rich in resources. Ybarra told us that the PvP will be meant primarily as an endgame.

Finally, Ybarra wanted to let us know that they have a very strong team going into this project. He said that their team has "lots of passionate MMO people with a great passion for trying to go great science fiction and a great Stargate product. He says that "storytelling is a really big part of what we're building". Their team is made up of a number of game veterans, "Zeb" Cook, of recent City of Villains fame, Chris Klug, the former Lead Content Designer of Earth & Beyond, Josh Kurtz, a former WoW world builder, Stu Rose a former art director from Blizzard, and Dan Elggrin formerly of EA, are just some of the names that are involved in the project.

Obviously, with a game so early in its first stages of production, Ybarra was unable to give us a date for the game's completion and release. He did say that they hoped for 18-24 months to build the game, and another 4-6 months for their beta cycle. That will put the game's release in and around the 12th season of Stargate: SG1, if the series runs that long. Obviously, this is something that neither Cheyenne Mountain nor MGM can say for sure, but the franchise should still be running strong with the Atlantis series at that time. What may happen in terms of story before that time is anyone's guess. As Ybarra said, "We're talking about history that hasn't been written yet".

The goal of the game is exploration, finding and unlocking alien technology or information to protect the earth, and fighting over resources. The native inhabitabts of a planet can be influenced by the players, and who they are aligned with will influence the way the game plays out. That means that the choices you make on any certain planet can have consequences; finally a game where players actually have an impact on the game world. Certain worlds will be designated as PvP zones, and certain parts of the universe will be PvE zones - a place to unite. All combat will be land-based with no space battles or individual space ships. There will be playable areas such as the decks on mother ships, but players cannot fly spaceships.

We then continued on to character types. I asked about traditional MMO archetypes: tank, dps machine, rogue, and so on. This is where the game will be quite different from standard MMOs. Because the weapons will be modern projectile or possibly laser weapons, the "normal" character choices won't fit in this world. There will be several "as yet to be decided upon" archetypes to choose from, with each race having an archetype (such as special forces, explorers, etc.) that is solo-friendly. The squad would be the optimal group. As for the playable races, that is still being decided, though Human and Jaffa are a given.

Progression will be level-based, not skill-based, with everyone being able to craft to some degree, though certain archetypes will be able to delve deeper into the tech tree than others. Loot drops will be equipment, new technology, and items that can "plug" into your weapon and/or uniform to make them more effective. At this time they are unsure about money and how it will fit into the game, but there will be requisition points throughout the game.

Shack: The game seems heavily focused on squad-based PvE gameplay. How much focus is there on PvP?

Jake Simpson: There is a roughly equal amount of focus on PVP as there is on PVE – For some reason people tended to focus on the PVE aspect of the original announcement – however interally there has always been intent to have a large PVP element. At this stage, with the design more down, PVP is starting to come into focus more. The end game should be 50/50 in terms of what you’ll be doing.

One thing we are trying to do is make the distinction between parts of the game where PVE is the main focus, and other parts where PVP is a more natural mechanic. This may come at a quest level, or even a server level; at this stage we are still nailing down the particulars. Suffice to say PVP is just as important at PVE right now. You can’t have an MMO without the opportunity to blow your mates away, can you?

blabla

MMOsite.com: What about the PVP system? Will players get any reward or penalty in PvP?

Josh Kurtz: We plan to have a voluntary PVP system that will allow our PVP oriented players to play their wway without interfering in the play experience of players who do not wish to engage in PVP. As for details or any rewards or special abilities, those will have to wait till another discussion.

Stargate Worlds details divulged
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6167289.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;2

The game itself will feature what Ybarra hopes will be a huge world that will have "all the planets, as many as we have time to build," though the game will apparently be structured to drive players to both explore and to discover the locations of new stargates--the portals that lead to the next unknown destination. In fact, the designer suggested the game will focus on three key points--exploration through stargates; tactical battles using the game's squad-based combat system that will involve both conventional weapons as well as more esoteric weapons such as orbital bombardment; and "replayability."

Players will be able to hit the "level cap" (the game's maximum character level) relatively quickly, and instead of focusing on creating characters that are more powerful, players will be free to explore and to participate in the game's player-versus-player (PVP) battle system, though Ybarra put forward the idea that the game's population will likely end up split between about 10 percent of hardcore fans in PVP, and the other 90 percent exploring the world and taking on quests.

...

Ybarra suggests that Stargate Worlds will launch in 2008, with some kind of beta test planned by the end of this year.

You'll be able to choose between "light and dark" sides, the good and evil sides from the television show. Your goodies will be Humans, Asgard and the freed Jaffa. Your baddies (boo, hiss), will be the Goa'uld, bad Jaffa still faithful to their evil overlords and nasty old humans.

From there on out it's a fairly typical MMORPG adventure, with crafting, levels, races and classes. Humans will be able to chose from the classic Stargate team line-up; soldier, commando, scientist or achaeologist, whilst others races will have to pick more culture-specific options.

Skills will branch across four areas, covering biology, physics, engineering and electronics, and you'll be able to increase and expand them as you become more powerful.

While it is all based on a levelling system, Cheyenne Mountain reckons you'll be able to chug your way up to the high echelons fairly quickly, before giving more focus to exploration or killing other players.

...

Your combat experience sounds like it's going to be tactical, but fast-paced, and Cheyenne Mountain's ultimate dream is to have Commands (guilds) battling it out all over the Stargate galaxy, which is said to be anywhere between 38 and 58 planets strong.

However, don't worry if all that isn't your cup of tea, because PvP will be restricted to specific gates, and even servers, in some cases.
